The gherkins did not glow as well as had been hoped but they did produce an impressive amount of smoke which is dimly visible in this photograph.

It turned out that pickled onions were vastly superior in their luminescent properties over their elongated counterparts. The experiments ran from about 20:30 until 23:00 and so the earlier pictures were taken in daylight and then unsurprisingly it got progressively darker. The glow is a lot more impressive in the dark.

After the experiments we were left with quite a large volume of partially cooked vegetable matter that had a distinctly unpleasant odour. This is proudly displayed by the researchers here:
